Marigold flowers have a calming effect on the central nervous system and reduce reflex excitability. They also possess antibacterial properties against a number of pathogens, especially staphylococci and streptococci. Substances derived from these flowers are used to treat burns, heavy wounds, sore throat and stomatitis.
Marigold flowers contain essential oils, carotenoids (α- and β-carotenes, lycopene, lutein, violaxanthin), flavonoids, saponins, salicylic acid, tar, mucilage, organic acid.
